The Story Of Sarah Hegazi, An Egyptian LGBTQ Activist

On September 22nd, 2017, twenty-seven year old Sarah Hegazi attended a Mashrou’ Leila concert in Cairo. She was subsequently arrested, imprisoned, and tortured in an Egyptian prison for three months for holding up the rainbow flag in support for LGBT rights.

Hegazi then sought asylum in Canada where she was recovering from the post-traumatic stress due to her time in prison.

Sadly, Hegazi died by suicide yesterday leaving behind a note. She was struggling with depression, PTSD, and anxiety.

Her note read: “To my siblings: I tried to survive and failed, forgive me. To my friends: this is difficult and I am too weak to fight, forgive me. To the world: you were largely cruel but I forgive you.”

Sarah, despite what you said, know that you were strong and powerful, and what you went through no one with any amount of strength could ever withstand.

Humans have truly lose their humanity.
