How These Jordanian Areas Got Their Names

How many of us know the stories behind the fantastic names of our beloved areas in Jordan?

Chmeissani

Where the tribes of Beni Sakhr would “expose” themselves to sun (chems).

Sweifieh

When the tribes of Beni Sakhr would visit this region, in their dialect they would say” bedna namdi alsweif” meaning summer…and thus the name Sweifieh was born.

Ras al Ain

The spouting point of the Amman torrent!

Mahatta

Named mahatta (station) due to the train station in the area.

Wadi Saqra

Or, Wadi Zara — Zara means water, so it translates into the Valley of Water.

Umm Sumaq

Back in the day, there were many sumac trees in this area.

Deir Ghbar

Due to the amount of dust (ghbar) that is always in the air.

Abdali

Of course, in honor of the founding King Abdullah.
