8 Things That Have Changed In Jordan Since The 90s

Ever since the 90s, so much has changed in Jordan and many of us have barely noticed. Here are the 8 of the most notable things that have changed in Jordan since the 90s.

1. International fast food chains

Fast food chains have existed in Jordan since the 80s but were always 100% local. Towards the end of the 90s, international fast food chains spread in, taking over the market with each restaurant expanding to several branches.

2. Songs

Anyone born between the 80s and 90s has lived through a childhood or adolescence on the tunes of songs that bring back memories of love and revenge. The best part about these songs was the music videos, an entire storyline with characters. No wonder we used to cry while hearing “3athebouni” – Assi Hellani!

3. TV Series

Who hasn’t seen “Kassandra?” The Mexican series was very popular in Jordanian households; even the streets would be empty while it aired. But now this has changed with Turkish series taking over. As a result, the majority of the Jordanians went to Turkey for vacation and are starting to learn the language.

4. Apartments

A long time ago, houses were standalone and had their own gardens for special gatherings. Today, sadly, building apartments are taking over and neighbors barely know each other.

5. Cafes and Bars

There were barely any places for young people to smoke arguileh or drink in Jordan, and it was always considered a taboo in our culture. Anyone who went there would have to come up with endless lies and would never bring it up. Today they exist abundantly.

6. The Language

The language has completely changed since the 90s. You could now go for days without having to speak Arabic, and those who do speak Arabic probably speak Arabish (one Arabic and 10 English words).

7. Clothing

Throwback to when everything was “3ayb”.

8. Shopping malls

Currently, shopping malls are considered the place to be, appropriate for people of all age groups and backgrounds. If you feel like shopping, if you want to spend a day with the family or if you’re going out with a group of friends, you go to a shopping mall.
